National Level Inter-collegiate Ultimate Frisbee Tournament

2 Mar 2019

School of Engineering and Technology, Jain (Deemed-to-be University) in collaboration with Ultimate Players Association India (UPAI) organized a National Level Inter-collegiate Ultimate Frisbee Tournament on 23 and 24 February 2019.

Ultimate, originally known as Ultimate Frisbee, is a non-contact team sport played with a flying disc (Frisbee). Although Ultimate resembles many traditional sports in its athletic requirements, it is unlike most sports due to its focus on self-officiating, even at the highest levels of competition. Being gender neutral, the sport provides opportunities galore for both women and men equally. At any point of time, there will be seven players (from each team) on the field in the ratio of both 4 women and 3 men or vice versa. As it is a non-contact sport, injuries are almost non-existent.

This tournament is a huge opportunity for Ultimate playing colleges to convene at the same place, interact with each other, and most importantly encourage the college Students to play Ultimate Frisbee.

The tournament started on 23 February with an Inaugural ceremony. Prof. Yogesh, Sports Coordinator at SET JU and Mr. Deepak John Nayak, member of Karnataka Ultimate Players Association (KUPA) were Honored as the Chief Guests. 11 Colleges from across the country had participated in the tournament playing league matches. With two days of intense and competitive games, MTB Arts College from Surat beat all the other teams to win the title of the Best Ultimate Playing College. Losing to MTB Arts College in the finals, Indian Institute of Sciences from Bangalore won the runners up position. The sports Ultimate also has another category of awards called the Most Spirited Team (Fair play Award) of the Tournament and Jain (Deemed-to-be University) has earned this title.

The awards were facilitated by Mr. Divyakantha, Physical Director at SET JU and Mr. Jashan Shetty, Former Team India Captain who represented Indian Ultimate at Australia. ARIA DISCS, KUPA, 91ULTIMATE sponsored the event at various stages.
