Visit to HAL Museum | 29/02/2020 | Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the premier aircraft manufacturer in India, was set up in Bengaluru in 1940 and has been manufacturing aircraft since then. Hence, it is a really important destination for budding aerospace engineers to visit the HAL museum and experience the development of Indian aviation first hand. The students of the 4th semester Aerospace and Aeronautical Engineering from JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) were treated to this experience on the 29th of February 2020. As they stepped into the museum, the students were excited to see many different full-scale aircraft on display. The fighter aircraft naturally drew the biggest crowds. These included veterans of the Indo-Pak wars such as the Ajeet, Canberra and the Mig 21 to the newest inventory in the Indian Air Force such as the Sukhoi-30 and the LCA-Tejas. The sheer scale of the Seaking helicopter wowed them as such an aircraft is not commonly on display. The Indian manufacturing might was also showcased with the NAL-Hansa, the Advanced Light Helicopter Dhruv and the Intermediate Jet trainer Sitara. However, of all the aircraft, perhaps the most unique was the agricultural aircraft Basant. Those interested in propulsion were not disappointed and they were treated to a whole line-up of jet engines including the powerful Adour engines which are used on the Jaguar attack aircraft. The museum visit was appreciated by the students and faculty alike as it brought to life many of the concepts that could only be seen in textbooks. The success of the visit was enabled in no small part by the museum staff who patiently answered enthusiastic questions from the eager students. |
