What It Takes to Build Aircraft for the Frontline

Bengaluru, 3rd August 2026: An aerospace engineer's job does not end at the drawing board. For those hoping to work with India's defence forces, it begins there. That was the message Major Arun Sreedharan (Retd.), a Defence Technology Strategist and former Indian Army officer, brought to students during an expert talk hosted by the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

Sreedharan spoke about what separates a good engineer from one truly prepared to contribute to national defence. Technical knowledge, he explained, is only the starting point. Equally important are professional discipline, leadership under pressure, and the ability to work across disciplines rather than within a single narrow specialisation.

Much of the talk centred on where the sector is heading. Sreedharan walked students through emerging technologies shaping modern defence systems and the career paths opening up as India pushes toward Atmanirbhar Bharat, its vision of self-reliance in defence manufacturing. He stressed that this vision depends on young engineers who are willing to innovate rather than simply follow existing designs, and who understand that defence technology today draws on far more than aerospace alone.

He also touched on the everyday qualities the sector values, adaptability, sound judgment, and the ability to communicate clearly within a team, alongside the technical foundation a degree provides.

The session drew active participation from both students and faculty, with a steady stream of questions on career pathways and the realities of working in defence technology.

By the end of the talk, the room had moved past textbook aerodynamics into a conversation about purpose, leaving students with a clearer sense of what it might mean to build for a cause larger than themselves.
