An industrial visit to the 66/11 kV Substation in Jakkasandra, Kanakapura Taluk, was organised by the Spark Club for students of the Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department on 24th March 2025. A total of 44 students from the 7th, 5th, and 3rd semesters, along with three faculty members, attended the visit to gain practical exposure to substation operations. The substation receives two 66 kV incoming transmission lines, including one from Sommanahalli, which are stepped down to 11 kV for distribution to nearby villages. The facility houses one 100 MVA-rated transformer, with another under construction. It features key components such as wave traps, lightning arrestors, circuit breakers, isolators, current transformers, potential transformers, step-down transformers, and auxiliary bus-bar arrangements. Students also visited the control room, where they were introduced to protection schemes and the PLCC control room, which is essential for carrier communication and protection. Mrs. Trupti V. N. further explained the importance of the battery room, which provides a DC supply for the circuit.
The visit was highly beneficial, offering students hands-on experience with substation components and operations. They gained insights into power transmission, transformation, and distribution while learning about essential protection mechanisms. Observing real-world applications of theoretical concepts helped bridge the gap between academic knowledge and industry practices. Interacting with industry professionals like Dr. Raghu N. and Mrs. Trupti V. N. enriched their understanding of substation infrastructure and safety measures. The visit broadened their perspectives, enhancing their technical acumen and preparing them for future electrical and electronics engineering careers.
