GIS Fundamentals Workshop hosted by JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) to Strengthen Civil Engineering Competency

Bengaluru, 05 February 2026: JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) conducted a one-day workshop on “GIS Fundamental Tools and Handling” on 5 February 2026 at the Core Block, Department of Civil Engineering. The programme brought together civil engineering students for intensive training in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), focusing on practical tool usage and real-world applications.

The workshop was designed to provide participants with a foundational understanding of GIS concepts while strengthening their technical capabilities through hands-on learning. Sessions covered spatial data types, coordinate systems, map layering techniques and basic geoprocessing methods. Particular emphasis was placed on practical tool handling, data visualisation and the integration of GIS in civil engineering functions such as surveying, urban planning, environmental assessment and infrastructure development.

Through interactive demonstrations and guided exercises in a live software environment, participants gained exposure to contemporary GIS platforms commonly used in industry and research. Faculty members from the Department of Civil Engineering led the sessions, offering practical insights into how spatial analysis supports evidence-based planning and decision-making.

Highlighting the importance of practical exposure in technical education, a faculty coordinator from the Department of Civil Engineering explained that the workshop was designed to bridge academic learning with professional practice. The coordinator noted that as spatial technologies become integral to infrastructure planning and development, proficiency in GIS is now a core competency for civil engineers, and initiatives of this nature ensure students acquire industry-relevant, applied skills.

The event was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students, reflecting strong academic interest in spatial technologies and their expanding role in infrastructure and environmental management.

The workshop forms part of the University’s ongoing efforts to strengthen applied technical education and industry readiness. By integrating practical GIS training into academic engagement, JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) continues to support skill development aligned with evolving professional and research standards in civil engineering and spatial analysis.
