Learning What Comes After the Code

Bengaluru, 18 August 2026: For a room full of engineering students, code is often the finish line, the last step before a project works. Dr Ram Chandra Bhushan, Innovation Lead and Technical Architect at ALSTOM, visited JAIN (Deemed-to-be University) to show them it can just as easily be the starting point.

The Department of Information Science and Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Technology, organised the Tech Talk and Guest Lecture titled "Beyond the Code: Evolution of AI & Building Smart Recommenders" at the FET Campus, drawing 60 students for an offline session built to connect classroom learning with industry practice.

Dr Bhushan shared industry perspectives on the evolution of Artificial Intelligence, contemporary technology trends and the development of intelligent solutions. He encouraged students to see technical skill as a starting point rather than an endpoint, and to consider how a project idea could grow into a research contribution or an industry application worth publishing.

Much of the session's value came from what followed the talk itself. Students discussed their own ideas and projects with Dr Bhushan, receiving perspectives on technical improvement, scalability and future possibilities, an exchange that gave them a clearer sense of what the industry expects from graduates entering the field.

The Department names Mr Ravindra Bhandary, Vice President, JGI, and the FET Leadership for their support, and Event Coordinator Dr Rakesh Kumar Donthi, Programme Head Dr A. R. Chayapathi and Dr K. Manivannan, Professor and Head of the Department of Information Science and Engineering, for steering its coordination.

By the time the session closed, students left with a greater awareness of what Artificial Intelligence makes possible, and of what it means to move beyond the code towards innovation, research and real-world impact.
