Bengaluru, October 17, 2025: The Department of Aerospace Engineering organised an educational industrial visit to the ISRO Telemetry, Tracking and Command Network (ISTRAC), Bengaluru, for 36 students of the 5th Semester B.Tech Aerospace Engineering, accompanied by two faculty members and one lab instructor. The visit aimed to provide students first-hand exposure to satellite telemetry, tracking, and command systems, bridging theoretical learning with practical applications in space mission operations.
The session commenced with a technical briefing by Mr B. Sankar Madaswamy, Scientist/Engineer-SG and Division Head, HRLD, ISTRAC. He elaborated on the organisation’s mission, facilities, and key operational domains, emphasising the importance of telemetry and real-time mission control in India’s space programmes.
Students engaged in in-depth discussions on orbital mechanics, satellite tracking, and trajectory design, particularly focusing on interplanetary missions such as the Mars Orbiter Mission.
A key highlight of the visit was an interaction with Dr Anil Kumar A K, Director, ISTRAC, who shared the organisation’s 50-year journey from Aryabhata to Gaganyaan. His address inspired students to pursue research and innovation in space technology and actively contribute to India’s growing space sector.
Guided tours of the Mission Control Room allowed students to observe live monitoring systems, data handling mechanisms, and stages of satellite operations. These experiences deepened their understanding of integrating engineering principles and real-world space mission management.
Reflecting on the visit, Mr Shashikumar S, Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering and organiser, said: “Exposure to ISTRAC’s operations has immensely benefited our students, offering them a glimpse into India’s technological excellence in space research. The interaction with ISRO scientists has motivated students to explore career and research avenues in aerospace engineering.”
The visit concluded with Dr Kiran K S and Mr Shashikumar S presenting mementoes to ISTRAC officials, who expressed gratitude for their valuable time and insights.
